efficiency calculations

In some examples efficiency is calculated by

Pout / Pin

and in other places it has been calculated as

Pout / (Pout + Ploss)

How do we know which one we should use?

Both expressions for efficiency are equivalent (Pinput = Pout +Ploss). If you have a value for input power then it is proably easier to calculate as Pout/Pin. If not, then you can add up the losses and calculate as Pout (Pout + Loss).
